OK the guy is not quite a kid but he seems to have transformed Tottenham from being perennial underachievers to winners once again. In this article, I delve into this pro manager’s past to see where he gets it from.

Like most managers, Ramos used to play for several top sides but his career was cut short by injury.

He coached a number of teams since 1993, the most famous being Betis and Espanyol, however his achievements with Sevilla are what brought him to the attention of the international football scene.

First of all, Ramos took Sevilla to two consecutive UEFA cup wins and a third place in La Liga, the Spanish domestic league. This propelled him to the top of the second tier of world club managers today.

Despite Sevilla playing in the Champions League in this current season, Ramos was flattered by an incredible 6 million Euros per year offer from Tottenham that he simply could not refuse.

Incredibly, Ramos has transformed a team that have always had talent but underachieved into successful winners as seen by their recent Carling Cup win. Along the way he has claimed scalps such as a 5-1 thumping of their greatest North London rivals, Arsenal.

It seems that Ramos is a great manager and able to extract the best from his players. Just look at this quote from an interview during his time as Sevilla manager: “Sevilla don’t have any stars but we win the games on the basis of humility and a level of physical exertion that is very, very high.”

This typifies Ramos’s style and it is said that his approach to fitness and diet since joining Tottenham have played a very large part in their recent turn of form.

The World Cup 2010 is some time off yet, the qualifying campaigns have not started, but is now as good a time as any to get the ball rolling and start predicting the eventual winner in South Africa?

For the first time ever, the worlds premier sporting event will be hosted on the African continent. This will bring a different culture to the forefront of everyone’s consciousness even though the tournament itself will take place in Africa’s richest economy.

Is there a home advantage? Does this mean that the emerging African nations will fair better than in recent World Cups having been tipped for greatness but always seeming to fall short? Or will it be one from the usual gang of five nations that lifts the Trophy again? Amongst the usual suspects, it will be no surprise to see Brazil or Argentina - the giants of South American football.

From Europe we need look no further than the current champions Italy, the perennial tournament experts Germany, and the flair of France. Or do we? Will England eventually break free from it’s overly haranging press? And, under the stewardship of italian Fabio Capello, will they finally achieve their country’s dreams, after 44 years, of it’s one and only World Cup success? Can fellow underachiever Spain put together a concerted run and for once fulfil the talent they generally bring to any world cup?

Following on from these teams, there are also a number of possible winners. If given a run of luck, which any country will need during the tournament, dark horses Croatia are always technically gifted. Sweden, Norway and Russia are solid. Holland will be full of talent. Greece and Turkey have also come a long way, respectively. In truth it is difficult to assess the outcome but my head still tells me it will be one from the usual five. My heart on the other hand hopes it will be England.

A few weeks ago, I went out for a beer with a few friends. We visited an Irish pub and, of course, there was soccer on the tube. Our discussions eventually led us back to, shockingly, soccer. We made a conversational foray into Concacaf qualifying and discussed who the most likely teams to qualify for it were.

One of the gang was a Jamaican fellow, a soccer fan, and a despairing Jamaican national team fan. I admitted him to him my constant frustration with the Jamaican National Team. I’ve never watched Jamaica play a soccer game without screaming at the TV “SHOOT THE BALL! SHOOT IT! STOP PASSING! SHOOOOOOOOOT!” I learned that night that I’m not the only one who feels that way.

We discussed the reasons for Jamaica’s lack of success the last 10 years. Despite their enjoyable and skilled brand of soccer, Jamaica hasn’t appeared in the World Cup since 1998 and failed to advance past Caribbean Cup qualifying most recently - leading to their loud absence from the 2007 Gold Cup. While certainly there are socioeconomic factors at play and the fact that Jamaica’s national side isn’t overly well-funded and has a paucity of soccer players playing their club soccer outside of Jamaica, there’s something else amiss.

The theory proposed by my Jamaican companion at the bar was that Jamaica regards soccer as a “gentleman’s game”. What he meant by this can be simplified to mean that the Jamaican side seems to feel obligated to have every player participate in every possession and also that the Jamaican defense allows the opposition an opportunity to manuever with the ball. In short, each player gets a fair chance with the ball. In terms of a code of honor, it’s comparable to tossing an unarmed man a weapon before engaging in combat.

This approach leads to creative passing and attractive soccer. Every time I’ve played soccer with Jamaican players, I could rest assured that my ball-hogging nature would be appeased. Short passes and adept ball control always seemed to be the priority. This certainly leads to each player feeling involved in the games, but what it doesn’t lead to is shots, goals, or victories.

Although I would be willing to bet decent money that Jamaica is consistently outshot and outfouled by opponents, I admit that this argument can be punched full of holes due to lack of empirical evidence. For the life of me, I couldn’t find shot statistics for Jamaica’s games in the last two years -please email me if you can find these stats.

However, I have a few things to support my arguments. First, my own eyes. Jamaica never seems to take shots and passes up opportunities that present themselves. The soccer is pretty, the passing is gorgeous, but it ends up looking like a poor man’s Brasil.

Second, I have the results from Jamaica’s last couple of years of play. Now, it’s vaguely possible that Jamaica is taking 100 shots a game amd converting none of them, but that’s about as likely as Carlos Ruiz going a game without diving.

In 2006, Jamaica played 6 international friendlies, only managing to win one while allowing 14 goals compared to a paltry total of 5 scored. In 2007, over a stretch of 9 friendlies, Jamaica chalked up 3 wins and 10 goals, while conceeding 17 goals and 5 losses. Hardly the two year record of a team ready for the World Cup.

With the rehiring of Rene Simoes amd some up and coming young strikers in the players pool like Shelton and Bryan, Jamaica seems to think they have a lot of momentum heading towards qualifying than in the last ten years.

I’m certainly not going to discount them totally at this stage. Jamaica has talent and drive going for them. However, until they embrace a ballhog, until they learn to stop passing the ball and take a few shots, they won’t qualify for the World Cup.

“Leave Your Opponents in a Spin”

When you have good soccer equipment nothing can keep you, or your squad, from improving. Unless you don’t use it. After all, where would a great artist be without his paints, brush, and canvas?

Results!

When you pair the right soccer equipment with excellent soccer drills you can make great improvement of your talents, or the skills of your team. More talent, better results, Yes?

So let’s check out……..

What’s out there?

When it comes to soccer training equipment there are many advanced tools to get the most out of any soccer player, and improve the level of skill.

Soccer Balls!

The game of soccer revolves around that perfectly round soccer ball. Soccer balls have different sizes based on the age level of the players that use them. They also differ in color scheme and design. We all know we need to increase our endurance to play soccer, but without ball skills you are just a runner.

Soccer Bags!

An easy to carry bag for all those soccer balls is a good investment. Who likes having all those balls flying around in your vehicle?

And what about…..

Carrying all of your soccer gear. Just find a great design and a bag that will set you apart, or show your support for your favorite soccer club. It’s okay to be an individual while being a strong piece of your soccer team puzzle.

Improve Your Agility!

You can improve this part of your game with agility ladders that lay flat on the ground, or agility poles that stick in the ground. They are great for slalom practice. Or you can use cones on the ground, but when using poles it is more realistic. It shows that there is really an opponent in your way. Banana Steps and hurdles are 2 other tools that will improve your agility.

Soccer Goals

Soccer goals come in a variety of different sizes for different purposes.

The full size goal is available for regulation sized soccer fields. However, there are a variety of sizes available for practicing small-sided games and for youth soccer. These include portable soccer goals and indoor soccer goals of various sizes that depend on the size of the indoor site. Soccer goals will usually come complete with a soccer net so make sure that you check that out .

Other Choices!

There are many other soccer equipment items available for soccer training. These choices can include but are not limited to:

Training Chutes

Kicking Trainers

Soccer Corner Flags

Medicine Balls

Soccer Tennis Nets

Soccer Mannequins

Soccer Rebounders

Each one has its place in your training program.

Remember that the best piece of equipment that you can have is your mind. Staying focused on improving your game will provide faster and more effective benefits than all the soccer equipment you can buy.

“Better Skills and Improved Fitness”

Complete soccer training covers both of the most important areas to develop a strong soccer player.

If you have great fitness levels, but are poor at controlling the ball, you will not be as successful a soccer player as you could be.

Also, being able to control a ball with ease, and not being able to make it up and down the field, will really prevent you from enjoying this beautiful game.

So there are 2 areas to work on with your soccer training drills:

Ball Control Skills (technique)

Soccer Fitness

#1. Ball Control Skills!

Also called technique. Slick moves and precision ball exchange is the mark of an experienced and skilled player. To reach that level there a number of skills that you need to work on to improve your soccer game.

Ball Control - giving and receiving the ball.

Kicking the ball.

Passing the ball.

Dribbling - handling the ball while moving.

Heading the ball.

Throwing the ball.

Tackling your opponent (No, not like American football).

There are many ways to improve the skills portion of your game. Each strategy has its own benefits:

Repetition

Practice a move repeatedly until you can do it without thinking.

It will soon become automatic.Watch and Learn

Observing other more accomplished players on a regular basis will let you see what other can do. Then decide what you want to learn, and do it.Watch Soccer DVD’s or Soccer Videos

Watching soccer dvd’s or videos will allow you to visualize what others do. Not only will you be able to learn how to do it. But also how to defend against it. Plus you can replay it as much as you want to!Visualization

Close your eyes and see yourself making a certain move or making a certain play. Really focus on it. I have used this tactic more then once. It works. One day I was preparing for a championship game in a tournament. I was in the basement at home focusing on 2 goals that I wanted to score in the game. All I could see was me scoring those 2 goals. When I arrived at the field that day a friend of mine approached me. We talked a little and when he was about to leave he looked at me and said, very matter of factly, “you look like you have a couple in you today.” We won the game 5-2 and I had 2 goals. One with each foot! Just like I had visualized.

#2. Soccer Fitness!

Physical fitness is the other extremely important part of soccer training. No matter what position you play, you will be doing a lot of running. Except the goalkeeper. But the soccer goalie has to be fit as well.

Strikers, midfielders, and defenders all are required to run the length of the field many times during a soccer match. Most professional soccer players will run between 4 to 8 miles (6 to 12 kilometers) during a match.

Here are the main areas that you should cover in your soccer fitness training:

Speed & Agility

Continually improve these areas to out-maneuver your opponents.Flexibility and Warming up

You can have all the speed and moves in the world. If your muscles are not ready and warmed up for the torture that you will put them through, you may injure yourself.Strength & Muscles

Building your lungs is good. Combine that with weight training for soccer and you will create a winning combination.Combine these 2 areas of soccer training and you will defeat your opponents any time that you want to.

A direct free kick is a method of restarting play in soccer following a foul. Unlike an indirect kick, a goal may be scored directly against the opposing side without the ball having first touched another player.

There are two types of free kick in soccer; a direct and an indirect. There is also one special type called penalty kick, but we will not discuss it in this article.

However, the most common is a direct free kick which is a great chance to score, especially if you have a good technical shoot. You don’t have to be the hardest shooting player in your team to become good a good free kick taker; instead, you should focus on hitting the goal. A hard shot is more difficult to control and will often end up 50 yards behind the goal.

The opposite of direct free kick is the indirect kick. Before the ball finds your opponents net masks some of your teammates must touch it first otherwise the goal would not be approved. So, how do you know if a kick is indirect? Well, the referee will usually raise his/her arm above the head and leave it up until you kick the ball.

When performing an indirect kick you should have one teammate gently tap the ball so that another teammate who will stand behind the ball can kick it or pass it back to you. Keep in mind that ball must be touched by a teammate otherwise the goal would not count. This is very important to because many players tend to forget this rule.

Wayne Rooney tore defenders apart in the Premier League since his debut for Everton. But what makes his videos so compelling to watch? I discuss this and more in this article.

The maturity of his play, the passion, the sublime and the raw skill - all are what make Rooney so amazing to watch. And in today’s modern world of high definition, slow-mo freeze frame, multi angle action - it’s almost as if Rooney was made for modern day worldwide Premier League broadcasts.

This kid (he really is still a kid, isn’t he) burst on to the game a few years ago and made an immediate impact. What struck people most about him was amazing tenacity coupled with a kind of maturity in a youngster never seen before. Who else at his age was able to give not just one, but two or three drops of the shoulder to shake of defenders?

Later came his passion and aggression for the game. It is said that his aggression sometimes gets the better of him and that he should not concede so many yellow and even red cards. But taking the passion out of Wayne is like taking a bottle away from a baby - you just can’t do it! All this being said, he rarely lets his passion get the better of him.

The best example is during a match when the referee upset him and he had a heated argument. A few seconds later he received a pass and - “WALLOP” - he kicked an unstoppable screamer of a volley from about 25 yards out into the top corner of the net!

See this screamer of a goal, other Wayne Rooney videos and footage of many more Manchester United legends at http://www.MUFCVideos.com
